A successor committee and a period of direct management by UML were followed by the granting of a lease to a brewery company in 1981. It was sold in 2002. More was undertaken in 1902. Reflecting Lever’s concern for physical fitness, in that year William & Segar Owen built the gymnasium and an open-air swimming bath (Figs 16, 80). The former (later the Boys’ Club) was a weather-boarded building which, in accordance with Prestwich’s plan, was moved in 1910 from its original site to adjoin the swimming bath.
