It is, for example, possible to read detailed accounts of a patient's perverse internal reality in case studies that scarcely refer to childhood experience with caretakers. These might offer a sliver of history, which makes no contribution to the actual treatment, but nevertheless hints at fulsome pathogenic interaction between parent and child. From this particular analytic viewpoint pathological caretakers are considered of marginal importance. Attempts to focus on them, or relate the patient's dif®culties to them, are seen as diversionary.

It was analysed fruitlessly as envy of the therapist's liveliness and potential productivity. At ®rst appearance this was a schizoid state, leeched of emotion, described by Guntrip (1968) as a withdrawal from emotional interaction and dependency due to the failure of the patient's objects.
